Lowcountry Couple | Justin & Amanda
The couple: Justin + Amanda Brown
How many years have you been married? 9 years! Wow! (Next year is the big 10!)
Where do you live? Savannah, Georgia
Do you have kids? Yes. One. His name is Yoda. He’s 100 pounds. He’s an American Bulldog.
Tell us a little about yourselves. We are a husband and wife team that make up The Happy Bloom, a fine art photography company here in Savannah, Georgia. We just moved to Savannah in March and have absolutely fallen in love with this beautiful city. Justin is more West Elm while Amanda is more Pottery Barn.
Tell us your love story. We met in Show Choir. Yes, like an episode of Glee. After a few months of friendship, we took the step into a relationship. And we’ve been inseparable ever since. We got married very young which really forced us to grow together and we became the strongest of teams.
How did you prepare for marriage? We were young and we were preparing to move away from home and go to school in another state. We rented a tiny apartment in Orlando, FL - six hours away from our families! We moved there the day after we got married. In all honesty, being that far away from family during the first stages of marriage was so good for us. If we had problems, there was no-one to run to. It was just the two of us learning and growing together.
Describe your wedding day in one sentence. The day was simple and beautiful.
What are you favorite pieces from your registry? We have a few silver platters from a small jewelry store in our hometown. We still love them and use them every holiday season!
How do you celebrate your love? We celebrate in the little things. We have a rule of no phones or computers after 5PM. We dedicate every night to each other. No texting. No social networking. Just two people spending time with each other. Every day. We dance in the kitchen every time we cook. It wouldn’t be a normal night at home without it.
How do you make your house a home? Despite our initial desires, we built a new home. It was beautiful. But it truly lacked character. Every weekend that we have off, we do projects. Everything from a wood pallet living room wall to an antique mantle turned into a bookshelf finds itself in our home. We love texture, character and clutter. We love the smell of Frasier fir as we snuggle under our West Elm blankets.
What is your favorite thing about being married? We’re both married to our best friends. It doesn’t get any better than that.
Tell us how you balance career and marriage. We set aside specific business time and marriage time - we don’t let them overlap. If we don’t get a business chat in before our business hours are done for the day, it will have to wait until the next day because once we’re off the clock we’re not business partners, we’re husband and wife. Not saying this is an easy things but it is completely necessary.
Tell us how you've overcome challenges in your marriage. Together. That’s the best answer we can give. You have to pause in the middle of the tough times and remember that this is the love of your life. Remember the love that you have for each other and the commitment that you’ve made and realize that no matter the issue, you’re going to come out on the other side together.
Tell us one way you love on and serve your spouse. By never losing that young love. Never leave the “newlywed phase”. We have strangers ask us all the time if we just got married. When we tell them how long we’ve been married they’re always shocked. We still hold hands (even in the grocery store), constantly look at one another, and laugh with each other the way you do early in a relationship. If you can hold on to that young love, I truly think you’re set for life.
